Fan-Games; A Good Idea? Empty Fan-Games; A Good Idea?

Post by NotteEterna 24th April 2011, 2:08 pm

Ok, so as a fan of the Chrono series, I was researching the game when I came across a game called "Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes" a fan-game made to bridge the gap between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. The game was never released however, and here's why:
(the main site?) http://crimsonechoes.com/
(the reason why) http://crimsonechoes.com/letter.pdf

Having read the letter I believe it is because they "claimed" to have copyright to the title(which I see no true evidence of). It appears that if they didn't make that claim, the project would be allowed to live, but also at the same time, I believe that it would have been forced to disband regardless.

Arco and I are currently making a Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon fan-game so this is a very important topic to discuss.

And so I ask, are fan-games a good idea?

I believe as long as you give credit where it is due aka saying that (game name here) is copywright (company name here) also saying that you mean no harm to the franchise by making your game.

In fact RPG maker is in fact used for making fangames more often than original works. Mostly because of the love of the work that is done.

If you truly love the mystery dungeon series, please credit game freak and Pokemon's original creator.

So in my opinion...It depends on how you depict the game and display the credits.
so yes...Fan games are a good idea.

I was thinking somewhere along those lines, but I figured that I should get everyone's opinions on it prior to my decision as I don't want to have the threat of $1,500+ on my head, ya know?

Tis true...but I have also seen many shut down as well...I'll have to look into crediting further I suppose to make sure I do it right.

I never like fan games, but as long as you give credit where due then you should be good!

Yeah, we really need to know, I guess Berry is right.
I forgot what my title was for my version.
Wait, I think it was Hope. Yours could be Courage if you don't have the title.

WAIT WAIT WAIT! Also, watch out for Capcom. They don't allow fans to make a game relating to the original. (Megaman for an example). So yeah. ; A;

Thank you for your input Xiie n_n

But the Pokemon company is fan friendly I believe
so Notte has nothing to be afraid of as long as he gives credit.

I think theres nothing wrong with fan guys witht he case of Crimson Echoes well square just have a reputation of massivly over reacting to things like this sadly i mean just look at the deus ex leak something thats actaly going to make them money and there hunting the guy down mercylessly.

Fan games are a great way to expand on a games universe with your owne creative flair hell one project im working on is a massive cross over of about every game every made XD but due to the final fantasy elements of it ill probly only ever relase that one between my freainds and this comunity :3.
